Baby Signs
by Joy Allen
Available in board book, paperback, and Kindle formats. (Amazon)
We started trying to teach H. sign language pretty early, and to our surprise, he actually picked up quite a bit of it. For those not in the know, it's been proven that babies can understand language much earlier than they can use it verbally, and teaching them sign language helps them start expressing themselves. This book was really helpful in that regard. It's not a huge primer - there's only about ten or so words in it - but it's essential stuff like milk, diaper, and mommy and daddy. In any case, a pretty good place to start if you're looking for some basics.
Hop On Pop
by Dr. Seuss
Available in board book, paperback, hardcover, audiobook, and Kindle formats. (Amazon)
Another Seuss classic, Hop On Pop is a book of small rhyming words. H. has been slowly warming to this one, and seems to have picked up the pup-and-cup series of rhymes pretty well.
Match-up Analysis
While Hop On Pop has been gaining favor lately, Baby Signs is one H. likes to read a lot during the day, and he still seems to enjoy making the signs along with the book. As far as I'm concerned, that gives it a big leg up.
Prediction
Baby Signs with a narrow victory.
