Round 1: (2) Hippos Go Berserk vs. (15) Moby Dick

Battle of the oversized aquatic mammals!

Hippos Go Berserk
by Sandra Boynton
Available in board book, paperback, and hardcover formats. (Amazon)

Hippos Go Berserk was a hand-me-down H. received when he was pretty small. It had already seen a lot of love before we got it, and once he hit teething, it saw quite a bit more. It was one of his favorite teething toys for a hot minute, no idea why, and it's still a really popular one for him to bring over for a random read-reread-no-reread-it-again-or-I'll-cry session. I guess he just likes hippos and crying. Weird kid.

Either that or he's studying all the rude ways people crash parties so he'll know better than to wreck our house throwing a John Hughes-style party when he's in high school. One can hope, at least.

Moby Dick
by Jennifer Adams and Alison Oliver
Available in board book and Kindle formats. (Amazon)

This is the first tournament entry from the BabyLit series, which takes classic literature and turns them into concept primers for toddlers that manage to breeze through simple story beats. It's a super cute idea, and H. has a ton of them in his library. Moby Dick is, as you might guess, an ocean primer, introducing things like sailors, waves, a variety of fish, and, of course, whales.

Of the BabyLit books we have, this isn't really high on H's list. He prefers Dracula and Frankenstein, because he is a Baby Goth. But every now and then he gets in a mood to say hi to the page of gulls over and over again. Like I said, weird kid.

Match-up Analysis

Hippos Go Berserk is kind of a complete package in this match-up. It's got rhyming, counting, hippos wilding out, and at least one bus, which is close enough to a car for H's liking. Moby Dick, on the other hand, just has a page of seagulls. On the other hand, we did go to the aquarium today, so all the up-close time with the fish could be a big draw for it.

Prediction

Hippos Go Berserk lives to rage on another day.

Results

Moby Dick rides today's visit to the beluga whale tank to an upset victory.
