Round 1: (5) Doggies vs. (12) My First Book of Superpowers

Perfectly Normal Pups vs. Over Powered People!

Doggies
by Sandra Boynton
Available in board book, paperback, and hardcover formats. (Amazon)

Doggies is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin: a counting book featuring barking dogs. By the time you are done re-reading this for the 20th time in a row, you will marvel at all the different variations on the word "woof".

H. likes this book a lot, I'd imagine mostly because we have to make some wacky noises to accurately read it to him. If there's one thing toddlers love, it's making their parents act like idiots for their entertainment.

My First Book of Superpowers
by David Bar Katz
Available in board book formats. (Amazon)

Yet another DC superheroes book, My First Book of Superpowers describes all the heroes' different powers. Remarkably, this one doesn't feature Plastic Man. I guess "gets all bendy and stretchy" is a lot less exciting than "talks to fish" or "has obscene amounts of money and fascistic tendencies". Who knows with kids these days.

Oddly, the description on Amazon lists this as only featuring the male superheroes, but Supergirl, Wonder Woman, and Hawk Girl are also included. There's a separate book of Girl Power that features all the super heroines, which I think was published after this one, so maybe they tried to pretend this was a counter point? Anyway, just get your kid both of them and let them sort it out.

Match-up Analysis

Doggies is a pretty well-rounded contender here, since H. recently learned to say "puppy", and it's full of wacky noises. On the other hand, H. has also recently started being able to point out the different DC heroes when prompted, so that could be a big point in My First Book of Superpowers favor.

Prediction

Doggies will power through to the finish.

Results

I guess H. is a Giant Loser Nerd just like his parents. He picked My First Book of Superpowers.
